An automatic car is a vehicle that changes gears by itself without the need for a clutch pedal. This makes driving easier, especially for beginners or those who prefer a simpler driving experience. With an automatic, you just focus on the accelerator, brake, and steering.
Before starting, make sure your seatbelt is on and mirrors are adjusted. Press the brake pedal with your right foot and keep it pressed. Shift the gear lever from Park (P) or Neutral (N) into Drive (D) to move forward or Reverse (R) to go backwards. Then, gently release the brake and press the accelerator to start moving.
In an automatic car, there are only two pedals: the accelerator and the brake. The left foot is usually resting, and all pedal control is done with the right foot. This makes it simpler than a manual car, where you have to manage three pedals.
The car’s transmission handles gear changes for you. You don’t need to worry about when to change gears — the car selects the right gear based on your speed and acceleration, which helps you concentrate on the road and traffic.
To stop, press the brake pedal gently with your right foot. When parking, shift the gear lever back to Park (P) and apply the handbrake. Always make sure the car is fully stopped before changing gears to avoid damage.
Taking automatic driving lessons with a professional instructor is the best way to get comfortable driving an automatic car. At Blackburn Driving Instructor, lessons cover everything from basic controls to motorway driving and mock driving tests to prepare you fully.
Automatic cars make motorway driving easier because you don’t have to worry about gear changes on fast roads. Our instructors offer motorway driving lessons to teach you how to safely merge, overtake, and maintain speed on motorways.
Practice with mock driving tests in an automatic car helps you get used to the test format and routes. This experience boosts your confidence and helps you identify any areas needing improvement before your official test.
Automatic cars are easier to learn and great for city driving or busy traffic. They reduce the stress of managing gears and clutch, allowing new drivers to focus on road safety, traffic signs, and driving rules.
