A manual car is a vehicle where the driver changes gears by hand using a gear stick and operates a clutch pedal with their foot. Unlike an automatic car, you’re responsible for choosing the right gear at the right time, making it a more hands-on driving experience.
Before starting a manual car, make sure your seatbelt is on and mirrors are adjusted. Check for traffic signs and road markings around you. Press the clutch pedal fully down with your left foot, move the gear stick into neutral, and start the engine. Keep your foot on the clutch while you get ready to move.
The clutch pedal is essential in a manual car. It connects and disconnects the engine from the wheels. Press it down when starting, stopping, or changing gears. Learning good clutch control is important for smooth driving, especially during hill starts or in slow-moving traffic.
To move the car:
Press the clutch down fully
Select first gear
Gently press the accelerator pedal while slowly lifting your foot off the clutch
As you feel the car begin to move, fully release the clutch and press the accelerator a little more
Practice this several times in a quiet area during your manual driving lessons to get used to the timing.
Manual cars have a gear pattern marked on the gear stick. As the car gains speed, you’ll need to shift to higher gears:
Move from first to second gear as you reach around 10-15 mph
Move to third gear at around 20-25 mph
And so on, depending on road and traffic conditions
Always press the clutch down before changing gears and release it smoothly after.
When slowing down, press the clutch down as you brake to prevent the engine from stalling. Select a lower gear if continuing, or move the gear stick to neutral and stop fully if needed. Use your mirrors and observe traffic signs as you slow.
Hill starts require good clutch control to avoid rolling backwards. Hold the handbrake up, press the clutch and select first gear. Gently press the accelerator, then slowly release the clutch until you feel the car pulling. Release the handbrake while pressing the accelerator to move up smoothly.
To reverse, press the clutch down fully, move the gear stick into reverse gear, check mirrors and blind spots, and slowly lift the clutch while gently pressing the accelerator. Always move at a walking pace while reversing.
